Since the Canon is composed only of inspired writings, are all the books of equal value? What was Luther’s view?
Absolutely yes, you can not just disregard a book that is inspired. An inspired book has biblical truths that’s use by the church for faith and practice. Mr. Luther misunderstood the basic Biblical principle of good works of James 2:17. Good works are the result of a humble faith to God through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. It is the visible manifestation of faith to promote that there is a spiritual transformation and reformation of a professing believer of Jesus. This manifestation serves as testimonies to the people around that had not yet encounter the loving grace of our savior Jesus. This manifestation will shine the attitude of Christ as 1 peter 2:9 says “but you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light”. Good works will not save in Isaiah 64:6 we are all infected and impure with sin. When we proudly display our righteous deeds, we find that they are but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall. And our sins, like the wind, sweep us away. Self-righteousness is deceiving to profess that we can boast on our good deeds in Ephesians 2:8,9 says for it is by grace we are saved through faith not by works it is the gift so that no one can boast. It is only thought the redeeming works of Jesus that we are saved through faith on what has Christ accomplished in Hebrews 9:14 goes “How much more will the blood of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God”? Jesus is the perfect sacrifice for our sins as in the Old Testament where they sacrifice lamb for their sin remission but Jesus has ended all the sacrifice for He is the perfect lamb that will end all those repetitive atonements, He came once for all time, at the end of the age, to remove the power of sin by His sacrificial death for us (Isaiah 9: 26). Justification is Jesus’ Job which I believe Martin Luther is promoting .
